Border Reopens
Macedonia reopened its border with Greece on Monday, and allowed hundreds of refugees to enter. The government closed the border last week when it declared a state of emergency. Police used force to try to keep the asylum seekers from entering. Over the weekend, around 7,000 refugees crossed through Macedonia in to Serbia by foot to try to reach the EU. Most of them are from the Middle East, Asia and Africa.
Global Stocks Fall
Global stocks fell sharply on Monday. China’s benchmark index, the Shanghai Composite, fell 8.4 percent. As Chinese stocks fell, so did other Asian exchanges, from Indonesia to Japan. Two weeks ago, China devalued its currency, the yuan. That caused market concern about Beijing’s economy. And now Asian stocks have fallen to a three-year low. Meanwhile, Brent and US crude oil fell to six year lows. Three major European Indexes fell by more than two percent.
President Demands Apology
President Park Geun-hye has called on North Korea to apologise for a landmine explosion that happened earlier this month. The explosion in the demilitarised zone between the two countries wounded two South Korean soldiers. Pyongyang denies that it placed the mines. The two Koreas are currently in talks after they exchanged artillery fire at the border last week. They are still technically at war because they’ve never signed a peace treaty to formally end the Korean war fought in the 1950s.

US President Barack Obama said he supports making Puerto Rico a state if the islanders back it. Puerto Ricans have voted in three referendums to remain semi-autonomous, but a recent poll suggests a changing mindset.
