The death toll in the Philippines from the destruction caused by Typhoon Rai has passed the 400 mark, the country's government said on Friday, as authorities in some hard-hit provinces called for more supplies of food, water and materials. shelter about two weeks after the storm. Rai was the 15th and deadliest typhoon to hit the Southeast Asian country this year.
The reported deaths reached 405, mainly due to drownings, fallen trees and landslides, Ricardo Jalad, head of the national disaster agency, said at a news conference, as reported by Reuters. He said 82 citizens were missing and 1,147 wounded.
More than 530,000 homes were damaged, a third of which were completely destroyed, while damage to infrastructure and agriculture was estimated at $459 million (about 2.5 billion reais), said Jalad.
The typhoon affected nearly 4.5 million people, including about 500,000 sheltered in evacuation centers, government data showed. The weather event hit the mainland as a Category 5 typhoon on December 16 and left a trail of destruction in Bohol, Cebu and Surigao del Norte provinces, including Siargao Island and Dinagat Islands.
Rai's destruction has revived memories of Typhoon Haiyan, one of the most powerful tropical cyclones on record, which killed 6,300 people in the Philippines in 2013.
