The Stampede starts (officially) on the first Friday of every July. I worked in the public relations department of the Calgary Stampede in the 1980s (as a "Howdy Folk") and loved the experience and also learned how big this event is - and it's far larger today.
The Stampede Parade kicks off the celebration (the first Friday morning of the Stampede) and thereafter, the rodeo is every day at 1:30pm and the Chuckwagon races and Evening Show are at 7:45pm each evening.
The Calgary Stampede is an annual event held in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, that has become one of the largest and most renowned rodeos in the world. It showcases Western culture, including rodeo competitions, chuckwagon races, agricultural exhibitions, concerts, and various entertainment activities. With its rich history and diverse attractions, the Stampede has become a beloved tradition for locals and a major tourist attraction, drawing visitors from all over the globe.
The history of the Calgary Stampede dates back to 1912 when Guy Weadick, a cowboy and promoter, envisioned an event that would celebrate the spirit of the Old West. With the support of prominent businessmen, he organized the first Calgary Stampede, originally called the "Frontier Days and Cowboy Championship Contest." The event aimed to preserve and promote Western heritage and skills, as well as showcase the agricultural and ranching industries of Alberta.
From its humble beginnings, the Stampede has grown exponentially, attracting participants and spectators from far and wide. The event gained international recognition during the 1920s when it began to host the world's top rodeo performers and entertainers. Over the years, the Calgary Stampede has evolved into a 10-day extravaganza, offering a wide range of attractions for people of all ages and interests.
One of the main reasons behind the Calgary Stampede's enduring popularity is its authentic celebration of Western culture. The event allows visitors to immerse themselves in the traditions, history, and values associated with cowboy life. Rodeo competitions, such as bull riding, bronc riding, steer wrestling, and tie-down roping, showcase the skills and bravery of both professional and amateur cowboys. These thrilling events create an atmosphere of excitement and competition that captivates spectators.
Another key aspect of the Stampede's popularity lies in its ability to appeal to a wide audience. While rodeo competitions remain at the heart of the event, the Calgary Stampede has expanded its offerings to include diverse entertainment options. Spectators can enjoy live music performances by renowned artists, indulge in a variety of culinary delights, explore the vibrant Midway with its exhilarating rides and games, or witness the spectacle of chuckwagon races.
The Calgary Stampede's commitment to showcasing the agricultural industry is also instrumental in its popularity. The event features extensive livestock exhibitions, showcasing various breeds of cattle, horses, and other farm animals. These exhibits offer visitors an opportunity to learn about modern farming practices and gain insight into the importance of agriculture in the region's economy.
In recent years, the Calgary Stampede has also embraced innovation and inclusivity to stay relevant and attract new audiences. The event incorporates technological advancements, such as mobile apps and digital experiences, to enhance visitor engagement. It also strives to be more inclusive by hosting special events and programs that celebrate diverse cultures, making the Stampede a welcoming and inclusive experience for all attendees.
