Krishen Khanna is a leading modernist whose works weave narratives in bold colours. Born in what is now Faislabad in Pakistan, he studied painting at the Mayo School of Art while working full-time as a banker. Later, meeting the Progressive Artists’ Group would inspire him to take up his passion for art full-time.
His seminal bandwallah series is inspired by the time he was held up by a local band while leaving his studio in Delhi. These vibrant works depict drummers and trumpet players among other band members in their colourful uniforms. The series is Khanna’s commentary as both a spectator and narrator of the immense class divide that exists in urban India.
