Britain's Prince of Wales has arrived in the US in a week dominated by the announcement that he and his wife are divorcing.

He's made a private visit to architecture students in Asheville, North Carolina.

The trip came as the Princess of Wales and the Duchess of York arrived at the French Riviera with their children, heading for a holiday hideaway.

Prince Charles getting a warm welcome as he arrived at the first American Summer School of the Prince of Wales' Institute of Architecture.

In week dominated by headlines at home about the royal divorce, he was here on a private visit to meet 25 students of the school.

Earlier in the week, the students scrambled to finish their sketches and clay sculptures in time for Prince Charles' visit.

They have been studying Biltmore Estates with the view that great architecture from the past holds lessons for today.

Prince Charles is scheduled to visit New York after North Carolina.
