This is part 6 in a series of attempts to summit Corno Grande, the highest mountain in the Italian Apennine range. With the advantages of a new advance base camp at 2,300m and the possibility of a full day with good weather I set out on my 6th attempt in 3 Ω years. This time, as before, I am determined to succeed if the mountain will just give me visibility.

The Summit of Corno Grande Part 6 Video Details
The previous night was spent cold in a Refugio at 2,400m.
It was 6 am and Corno Grande was clear in the distance behind me. Sun had just come over the horizon and I’m setting out once again.
Day 5
I started from Refugio again. This time the skies looked clear and might remain that way.
By 8 am I was beginning of vertical ascent. It took me a little longer than the previous day. I was tired, cold and hungry, so time for a sandwich before the next ascent.
Three hours later I was in the crown that surrounds the summit. I made a short bursts then sat and rested.
As I clear the crown I looked back and spotted other climbers. They looked determined.
So I wasn’t the only fool in Italy!
As I reached the last crest I took some time to look around and savor the moment. Three and a half years later and six attempts and I was finally in reach of my objective.
I spotted the summit marker. I couldn't believe it. Just a little bit further.
Summit Cross
Some people have called me foolishly stubborn. I'd set out to summit Corno Grande via the vertical face alone 3 years ago. At that time I'd forgotten that no mountain is easy. Especially if taken for granted. I'd paid for that mistake.

I did it. Each time I'd tried to summit, it had closed its self off with clouds and bad weather. Yet persistence and respect had paid off in the end. I was finally on the summit of Corno Grande, the highest mountain of the Grand Sassso range.
I took a moment to reflect on all my prior attempts.
Success at last. How sweet it was.
Success = 3 years and 6 attempts
The final score. Mountain 5, Livio 1.
