In Chiang Mai you really are spoilt for choice when it comes to stunning temples, so here’s our pick of two temples that you just can’t miss.
One of the most sacred and beautiful temples in Chiang Mai is Wat Prathat Doi Suthep. Built in the fourteenth century it is still a working monastery and place of pilgrimage for many Thais to this day.
Legend has it that a local King needed to find a new home for a magic relic. Unable to decide for himself where to build this new temple he entrusted the task to a white elephant, who walked to the top of Doi Suthep, trumpeted three times and then promptly died on the spot where today’s temple now sits. Whilst the temple itself is undeniably beautiful, and its history fascinating, for most the main draw to Doi Suthep is this… the incredible views.
Our second pick for temples not to miss is Wat Chedi Luang, located in the centre of the old city. Originally built to house the ashes of an ancient King, the temple was then given the honour of housing Thailand’s most important religious object – the Emerald Buddha, now housed in the Grand Palace in Bangkok. Although the temple’s great spire was destroyed by an earthquake and has never been rebuilt, the main structure still stands at over 60 metres and it is without doubt an impressive sight to behold.
So there you have it, out iTips top picks for un-missable temples in Chiang Mai. Now it’s time for you to explore for yourself.
