Relatively Late into the year, the 1979 Susan B Anthony Dollar coin was redesigned. The main focus was on widening the rim of the new small dollar coin.
This created the wide and narrow rim varieties for this date. Now the narrow rim is considered the normal type for this date. But the wide rim is considerably scarcer by comparison. These are also sometimes called the near of far date varieties.
