Hundreds of thousands of people brought in the New Year at Berlin's landmark Brandenburg Gate as the clock struck midnight on Wednesday (January 1) morning.
The annual street party attracted crowds of revellers in the centre of the German capital, many of whom had been waiting for hours to celebrate the start of 2014.
A lavish fireworks display lit up the sky over the Brandenburg Gate at midnight and lasted some eight minutes.
People partying on the streets said they had high hopes for 2014.
"I want to graduate from school, find my big love and just be happy and enjoy life," Diandra Hildebrand from the northern Germany town of Hanover.
"It's going to be so amazing, it's going to be the best year ever," shouted a tourist from Denmark.
According to the Berlin police, the gates to the street party had to be closed at around 2200 local (2100GMT) due to the large amount of people arriving in the area.
