To Buddhists, the death of a person's physical body is not the end of that person's life. Buddhism teaches that each individual should strive to achieve Nirvana, or enlightenment, which is described as being able to see the world as it really is, or being awake to reality.
Buddhists believe that achieving Nirvana is usually not possible in a single lifetime, so individuals are often reborn after death in a cycle of birth and rebirth called samsara, where the intentional actions, or "karma", of each individual determines how they will be reborn. Once an individual achieves Nirvana, the cycle ends, the enlightened individual physically dies, and they will no longer be reborn.
