The Humboldt Current is one of the world's most important fishing grounds. 8% of the global marine capture comes from the waters off the coast of Peru. This makes fisheries a major source of income for the local people. Most of the Peruvian fish catch is exported worldwide.
Climate change influences the Humboldt upwelling area and thus one of the most vital fishing grounds in the world.
A less productive upwelling area with fewer fish stocks not only has an impact on regional and global markets, but also directly affects the labour market and the prosperity of the people in Peru.
Scientists study the impacts of these economic changes to better understand and improve future fishery management and global food security.
The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Germany) and is part of the Bio-Tip call of the FONA- Research for sustainable Development program.
