FEMA expanded access to COVID-19 Funeral Assistance to help individuals who incurred funeral expenses early in the pandemic before testing was widely available and death certificates may not have included COVID-19 as a cause of death.
Beginning late July 2021, applicants who incurred COVID-19-related funeral expenses for a death that occurred between January 20 and May 16, 2020, will be able to submit a death certificate that does not attribute the death to COVID-19.
