Welcome back to our music theory series with Eric Lindsay, Professor of Music! In this fourth video, we dive deep into key signatures and how to quickly identify scales using the circle of fifths.
In this lesson, you'll learn:
- The two key functions of a key signature: which notes are altered and which notes are in the scale.
- How to read a key signature and quickly construct scales.
- How the circle of fifths helps memorize key signatures for all 12 notes.
- The concept of enharmonic pitches like B and Cb or F# and Gb.
- How to add sharps or flats moving clockwise or counterclockwise in the circle.
- How major keys and their relative minor keys share the same key signature.
Practice exercises will help you master key signatures, and we’ll introduce minor keys and their relationship to major keys—setting you up for our next lesson on minor scales.
