A video/photo benchmark between two identical Xperia XA2 H3113. It was done using the system Camera app, in auto mode.
The main concern of many users is:
"How the Camera will be under Sailfish OS?"
SONY has a long experience in the field of imaging, which is not only expressed at the hardware level, but is also realised at the level of of software.
Photographic algorithms in fact go to assist the small cameras in smartphones, and here — unlike in reflex cameras — they have a fundamental role.
The Sailfish OS camera does not use the SONY software, and behaves in a markedly different manner, though not always worse.
Nature photography
The first thing I noticed is that the SONY software did some heavy color and lux correction, but oddly, in this first scenario, the camera under Sailfish is capturing the real, both looking at the greenish and the red flowers.
So, there is a first surprise: the SF camera being more ‘rough’, simply captured the subject ‘as is’.
Still life, indoor
The Sony software takes some advantage: although the Sf OS shots capture exactly the situation, with low light, and low contrast, the SONY software here is doing a better job, adding contrast and luminosity as needed to take better pictures.
Low light (The Achilles heel)
Although not even the Sony side has fully convinced me, using the Android camera the phone has managed to capture enough information, enough to read the numbers.
The difference with the Sailfish OS side here is neat.
Video verdict
As for photos, the original SONY software (on Android) has a magenta / red cast, while the Sailfish OS is it has a green cast. The differences are low: in both cases the 'tap to focus' doesn't works: focus is automatic or fixed.
In some cases the Steady Shot ™, on the Android side, has made the images less shaky, but not much less. 4K video recording. With Android it should possible to do them, but the device tends to heat up immediately and I haven't seen improvements in the files.
