Born Jack Kenneth Slipper in London, he joined the Metropolitan Police in 1951, and rose through the ranks to become a Flying Squad detective investigating the Great Train Robbery in 1963 - eventually acquiring the nickname 'Slipper of the Yard'.
After helping in the arrest of many of the gang, he remained a police officer rising to the rank of Detective Chief Superintendent, until his retirement in 1979.
He would however remain in the public eye, particularly when a story about the escaped Great Train Robber Ronnie Biggs came to the fore.
