STORYLINE:
Brazilians despaired on Friday as they watched their team crash out of the World Cup going down 4-2 in a penalty shootout to Croatia.
Hundreds gathered in front of big screens in a fan zone in Sao Paulo sunk as the last shoot-out quickly looked like a one-sided affair after their first penalty was saved.
Some covered their eyes in the Brazilian flag draped around their shoulders, others shed tears.
At the fan zone in São Paulo, Giovana Arcanjo comforted her daughter Ana Luiza, explaining they had high expectations to bring the sixth championship home.
At Copacabana beach in Rio Janeiro, fans also showed gloomy faces after the defeat.
