A catastrophic event sparks a young Norwegian woman's memories of the five people who loved her most, in the visually stunning feature debut of West Coast musician and filmmaker Andrew Huculiak.
The feature debut of Andrew Huculiak (drummer for the West Coast rock band We Are the City) had a unique provenance: intrigued by the films of Norwegian directors like Joachim Trier and Jens Lien, Huculiak shot the film in Norway with his bandmates/collaborators and a skeleton crew, few of whom spoke Norwegian. Violent is the tale of Dagne, a young Norwegian girl who attempts to escape her small-town life. She soon finds herself hanging out with other assorted outcasts, including a comically suicidal young man who hasn't slept in weeks, and the lovelorn owner of the small store where she finds work. An evocative slice of life with a remarkably distinctive tone and a sometimes surreal visual sensibility, Violent establishes Huculiak and company as young filmmakers to watch.
