South Africa celebrates its heritage in September. During this month we learn about a kaleidoscope of cultures which must be promoted and strengthened. But, should we not also be using this time to reflect on some cultural aspects which continue to be practised but pose a danger to health and sometimes to life itself? In this week’s episode, we put the spotlight on some aspects of the cultural practice of cleansing in the Greater Manyeleti area in Mpumalanga. Some here believe the cleansing ritual is incomplete unless the widow or widower is sexually cleansed. This is done primarily to remove bad luck. However, it is never openly spoken about and is only known by those who find themselves widowed.
