You should ideally never have to trim your dogs nails. They are naturally worn down during walks and playing on rough surfaces.
Dogs who spend a lot of time inside on smooth or carpeted floors can have theirs nails grow too long. For long nails trim the very top and then leave them for two weeks to allow the blood vessel to retreat a bit. after two weeks trim a small piece off again. Depending on the length of the nails this may take quite a while, but when they are a proper length you can maintain them by walking on rough surfaces such as paths and roads.
