Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the city authorities in New York are battling to restore public transport but that Superstorm Sandy has inflicted the worst ever damage in the 108 year history of the subway system.
Superstorm Sandy caused enormous damage to the New York subway system, flooding tunnels, garages and rail yards and threatened to paralyse America's largest mass-transit system for days.
"MTA CEO Joe Lhota has described this as the worst disaster the agency has seen in the 108 years the subways have been running and ConEd has described the damage done to its power systems as unprecedented in scope.
