A Chart of the Channel in the Phillippine Islands through which the Manila Galeon passes together with the adjacent Islands.
(Pacific Islands, Philippines, Manila, Asia).
Issued 1748-9, London. Engraved by R.W. Seale.
Fine large scale mid-18th century engraved map. Strong nautical feel is imparted by the rhumb lines radiating out of the large compass rose, the tracks of a galleon ship leaving Manila for the open seas.
The island outlines shapes are all rendered with charm and distortions, at odds with the actual shapes easily visible today on google maps.
Short video captures condition much better than words. Please watch prior to purchase to ensure a clear understanding of the map. Various old paper repairs, closed 10" tear near top right edge, narrow margin across bottom and lower right edge, etc. -- all displayed and mentioned in greater detail in the video.
A great map which someone repaired a tear to in a less than expert manner. Old repairs would almost certainly readily float free and new basic restoration work would render this a nice looking example.
Map would also look fine if displayed as it survives, unsophisticated example simply offered as acquired.
Sheet measures c. 28 1/8" H x 21 1/2" W
Printed area measures c. 27 3/4" H x 20 3/4" W
