We spend an incredible weekend in Yosemite National Park watching fall turn into winter. After 2 days of hiking and enjoying the fall weather, a snow storm blows in on our 3rd day and we get to see Yosemite Valley covered in a blanket of snow! We truly could not have dreamed up a better weekend in this beautiful park!
Day 1
We start things off with an incredible sunrise at Tunnel View which looks down the valley toward El Capitan and Half Dome. This is one of the most iconic views in the park and is the perfect introduction to the weekend!
It is early November and they have closed Glacier Point Road because of some inclement weather that is expected to come in over the weekend. We had initially planned to drive up to Glacier Point but with the road being closed, we hike the Four Mile Trail instead which gets us to the overlook. This is a 9.2 mile round trip hike with around 3,600 feet of elevation gain.
The trail is pretty gradual and consistent all the way up and while it feels like there are endless switchbacks, we are rewarded with amazing views the entire way up! We make it to the top and are blown away with the views of Half Dome and the valley. To top things off, we have Glacier Point nearly to ourselves — there are just a couple other people up there with us!
After we make it back down to the car, the weather takes a turn so we call it a day!
Day 2
We hike to Yosemite Point which is around 8.5 miles, also with 3,600 feet of elevation gain. This hike has a lot more up and down and is much rockier and steeper that yesterday’s hike. It is definitely worth it though — Yosemite Point provides great and unobstructed views of Yosemite Valley.
On our way back down, we take the small detour to Upper Yosemite Falls Lookout. There is no water flow based on the time year and it starts to snow at this point, so we continue on our way back down the trail.
It snows on us nearly the entire way down but by the time we make it to the car, the weather has cleared a bit so we take the opportunity to drive around the park, stopping at many of the different look outs and viewpoints in the valley.
Day 3
Our first attempt to enter the park is unsuccessful because the snow has arrived in full force and they require tire chains to enter. Not letting this deter us, we drive back to where we are staying in Mariposa, buy chains and then drive the hour back to the park!
After 3 hours, we make it into the park and it is a winter wonderland! There is snow all around us as we make our way through the valley. The clouds clear briefly as we first enter the park but it quickly becomes a complete white out.
We have so much fun playing in the snow, making a snowman and throwing snowballs. The weather clears here and there and we spend the day simply taking in the views of the valley covered in a blanket of snow.
Yosemite is a magical place but seeing it in the snow is truly one of the best travel experiences we have ever had!
