Hundreds of residents who were evacuated from Whaley Bridge amid fears the damaged reservoir could collapse have this afternoon been allowed to return to their homes. More than 1,500 people had been evacuated from the Derbyshire town since Thursday amid heavy rain, although a small number were allowed back to their homes last night. After six days of tireless work by engineers and emergency service workers, the Environment Agency confirmed this afternoon that the measures remaining in place at the dam will be able to manage the levels of rain forecasted. Some roads are still closed today (centre), but residents have been advised that they will receive assistance to get back to their properties. Sandbags were still being dropped yesterday (top right) as they continued to secure the dam.
