If I can save even just one life by turning young people away from the dangers of abandoned quarries, then I will be very, very satisfied with the outcome.
Abandoned quarries can be breathtakingly beautiful. They can hide all kinds of treasures-- and secrets. In addition, on a warm summer day, their fresh, blue waters can seem irresistibly inviting. But sometimes, this attraction can prove to be fatal.
Near the town of Melissa, Texas, sits a majestic abandoned quarry. It flooded years ago, and today, its calm, blue waters bask radiantly under the rays of the hot summer sun.
But beneath the carefree, playful ripples on the surface lie many secrets and mysteries. Just under the surface lie hundreds of thousands of dollars of equipment that did not survive the flooding.
Most flooded quarries are normally pretty bare, with workers having managed to remove most of the expensive equipment before the waters took over. But this rare find is different. Were these vehicles flooded gradually after having been left there through neglect? Or, did the flooding happen suddenly, without giving crews enough time to evacuate their valuable equipment? We may just never find out.
But these flooded vehicles aren’t the only sunken secrets of this place. The quarry also holds a much more sinister, tragic, and deadly story.
On Sunday, May 27th, of 2018, an 18-year-old young man went swimming with his friends here, at this very rock quarry.
They entered the privately-owned quarry without permission and decided to swim across the water after diving in from a ledge. They swam about halfway through the quarry, but then, tragedy struck.
In the middle of the flooded quarry, the young man got tired and could swim no further. He soon started to panic. His friends desperately tried to save him, but they nearly lost their lives in the process as well, and were unsuccessful. He just went under and never resurfaced alive.
Dive teams from Collin County, Lewisville, and Wylie responded to the scene, but they were equally powerless to save the young swimmer’s life, only managing to recover his lifeless body after a four-hour search. Thus, this was a tragic decision that turned out to have deadly consequences.
What other secrets and stories lie below the surface of this sparkling and attractive, yet deadly body of water? Perhaps it would be wiser not to find out, and to instead keep clear of these seductive waters, and let them keep their dark, deadly secrets securely entombed deep under the surface, in their cold, watery grave.
