You only need a few basic ingredients to make these super soft and fluffy Classic Puto/Filipino Steamed Cake with Cheese Topping! This Puto recipe is 100% foolproof and the best part is that they still stay soft after a few days!
This is how to make Classic Puto/Filipino Steamed Cake with Cheese Topping:
Classic Puto with Cheese Topping
Yield: 30 large Putos
Ingredients:
330 g All-Purpose Flour/ 2 cups
250 g Sugar/ 1 cup
2 Tbsp Baking Powder
2 Eggs, room temperature
30 g melted Butter/ 2 Tbsp
120 ml fresh Milk, room temperature/ 1/2 cup
360 ml Water, room temperature/ 1 1/2 cups
2 tsp Vanilla Extract
Cheese for toppings
Directions:
1. In a large mixing bowl, sift in the flour, sugar and baking powder. Set aside.
2. In a medium mixing bowl, add in the eggs, melted butter, milk, water and vanilla extract. Mix until everything is well combined by using a wire whisk.
3. Pour the egg mixture into the flour mixture. Mix until everything is well incorporated.
4. Cover the Puto mixture with a plastic wrap and rest for 30 minutes.
5. In the meantime, lightly grease Puto molds with butter or oil.
6. Fill the bottom of the steamer with water and bring to a boil. Once the water starts to boil, turn down the heat to medium low.
7. Fill Puto molds with about 1/4 cup of the mixture.
8. Place the molds in the steamer and steam for about 10 minutes or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. *Make sure to cover the lid of your steamer with a kitchen towel to prevent water from dripping on your Puto.
9. Remove the lid and add a strip of cheese on top of each Puto. Steam for another 1-2 minutes.
10. After the Puto has slightly cooled down, remove the cooked Puto Cheese from the molds and transfer to a serving plate.
