(9 Jul 1999) Italian/Eng/Nat BAROCCO PAYS TRIBUTE TO ITALIAN MOVIE MASTER
Story: Fashion
Location: Rome
Date: 9 July 1999
Designer ROCCO BAROCCO provided an eye-opening start to the Rome Autumn/Winter haute couture shows with a black and white collection dedicated to film legend Federico Fellini and the spirit of "La Dolce Vita".
The soundtrack from Fellini's 8 and a Half filled the air as figures dressed as a ringleader and clowns opened the parade around the ancient Egyptian obelisk and marble lions of Piazza del Popolo square.
Hints of the 50s and 60s surfaced in red lipstick and elegant chignons, spiky stilettos, long chiffon scarves, geometric monochrome designs and boxy jackets. Fabrics brought the retro styles into the new millennium, with delicate stripes of pure white or jet black down, and floppy like ostrich feather boas stiched together which resembled las season's `puffa' jackets adapted for the seriously chic chick.
There was also a nod in the direction of the black gown worn by Anita Ekberg in Fellini's classic film. Barocco's version - elegant wide taffetta skirts draping from above the ankle at the front to a fanning train behind - came with trim, richly decorated bodices and taffetta stoles.
