Big Tim, one of the last of the estimated few dozen remaining ‘tusker’ elephants left in Africa, died at age 50 of natural causes on Tuesday morning, the Kenya Wildlife Service said. In announcing his death, the KWS called Tim “a benevolent, slow-moving preserver of the peace” in Amboseli National Park at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro. “He was well known and loved throughout Kenya,” they added. Advertisement Tim was a ‘tusker’ because his tusks grew so big they reached all the way to the ground. Usually, only the oldest elephants manage to do this, but since poachers target the animals with the biggest ivory, it can be tough for them to survive. Because of the damage that poaching has done to the gene pool, scientists say that elephants in Africa now have smaller tusks than they did 100 years ago. Tim, whose tusks weighed over 100 pounds, got speared three times in his life, and he was well-known in the area for getting into trouble. He made a habit out of trying to raid local farmers’ crops, and last year had to be rescued after he got stuck in a muddy swamp. Despite, or perhaps because of these foibles, Tim made a large impact on those who were close to him. “Tim was one of Africa’s very few Super Tuskers, and an incredible elephant whose presence awed and inspired many. He was one of Kenya’s National Treasures,” said the Kenya-based conservation group WildlifeDirect. He was so incredibly intelligent, mischievous, yes, but also a truly gentle giant and in that way a real ambassador for his species.”
