The historic linking of the STS National Database to the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid database is providing the cardiothoracic community with a unique opportunity to forge a true physician-hospital collaboration while improving patient safety and overall quality of care. The linkage makes it possible to conduct comparative effectiveness research, longitudinal device surveillance, and basic long-term patient follow-up, as well as determine the true cost of health care and streamline resource utilization (such as blood products and radiography).
