The 2024 MG5 small sedan is finally on sale in Australia, where it's looking to deliver a relatively low purchase price in a market that's progressively getting more and more premium and, therefore, expensive. Hence, a gap has opened up and it's looking to fill it.
So, how is the Chinese upstart trying to do it? Well, it doesn't come with the full suite of safety equipment that's available in some other markets. But in doing so, the new Hyundai i30 Sedan rival is knowingly heading towards a likely sub-five-star ANCAP rating, having opted against fitting key advanced driver-assist systems.
In this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Chris Thompson gets behind the wheel of the MG5's Essence flagship to find out if it's still a bargain or not. After all, its sub-$30,000 starting price, relatively large size and punchy turbocharged engine make it look tempting on paper.
