As countries grapple with how best to tackle the COVID-19 pandemic and the reverberations it is sending through their societies and economies, understanding of how the virus is behaving, and what measures might best combat it, continues to advance.

The 17th in a weekly series of interactive webinars on the coronavirus with Professor David Heymann and special guest, Sir Jeremy Farrar, helping us to understand the science and make sense of the latest developments in the global crisis.

What progress is being made in finding effective therapeutics? What aspects of the disease is drug research targeting and what might a game-changing treatment do? And what challenges are being encountered at the moment?

As director of the Wellcome Trust, Sir Jeremy Farrar helped set up a 'COVID-19 Therapeutics Accelerator' alongside the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Prior to joining the Wellcome Trust in 2013, he was director of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit in Vietnam for 18 years.

His research interests include infectious diseases and global health with a focus on emerging infections.

Professor Heymann is a world-leading authority on infectious disease outbreaks. He led the World Health Organization’s response to SARS and has been advising the organization on its response to the coronavirus.
