STORYLINE:
The prime minister and people of newly independent Kosovo reacted on Monday to election results in neighbouring Serbia, where a pro-Western coalition determined to bring Serbia into the European Union made a strong showing.
But a nationalist challenge cast a shadow over pro-Western President Boris Tadic's claim of victory in Sunday's vote.
The showdown reflected deep divisions among Serbs torn over whether to join the European Union or shift towards their traditional ally, Russia, and revert to their nationalist past.
Tadic proclaimed "a great day for Serbia" after projections by an independent monitoring group and partial results from the state electoral commission gave his Coalition for a European Serbia a 10 percentage-point lead over the ultranationalist Radical Party.
The rival camps each positioned themselves to begin talks on forming a new government on Monday, and the leader of the ultranationalist Radical party, Tomislav Nikolic, urged his allies to pull together.
Speaking in Kosovo's capital Pristina on Monday, Prime Minister Hashim Thaci welcomed Tadic's strong showing, saying it was "good news for Serbia, for the people of Serbia."
"It means more democracy in Serbia; it means, I think, more peace, stability in the region, and definitely orientation of Serbia's politicians to Euro-Atlantic structures, to EU and NATO. And I think definitely people of Serbia decided to look for the future and not for the past," he added.
He went on to say that he was "ready to cooporate with Serbia as two states for better future for our countries and our people."
