Public outpouring of grief for Diana Princess of Wales showed no sign of easing on Wednesday as thousands queued for hours to sign books of condolence.
Outside St. James' Palace in London, lines of mourners stretched back hundreds of yards, as the piles of flowers continued to grow.
Men and women from all backgrounds waited through the night for the chance to give their personal dedication to the "Peoples' Princess".
And at Buckingham Palace - the focal point for the nation's grief - hundreds more arrived to pay emotional tribute.
Three days after the tragic death of the Princess of Wales, and the sense of national grief shows no sign of abating.
Outside Buckingham Palace the sea of flowers grows ever bigger as the endless stream of tributes continues.
On Wednesday another huge crowd gathered to stand in shared contemplation, and read the hundreds of personal messages to the Princess.
And at St James's palace - where Diana's body will rest until the funeral on Saturday - thousands of mourners queued to sign books of condolence.
All these people in some way felt that the Princess had touched their lives.
Even though some of them faced a wait of up to 12 hours, they felt compelled to make the effort to give a personal dedication.
For some, talk in the queues was of how best Diana could now be immortalised.
Some want a statue, others a hospital.
Already a fund has been set up to channel public donations to the charities the Princess supported until her death.
Now, many would like the memorial fund to become a permanent organisation - continuing to support Diana's favourite causes.
But whatever form the memorial takes, it's clear from the unprecedented display of grief that the people will demand a permanent reminder in keeping with the Princess' personality.
Beside St James's palace - as at Buckingham palace - the mound of flowers continued to grow on Wednesday.
Mourners, some close to tears, placed their floral tributes and messages beside the thousands already there.
All around, a sense of wonder as to how such an tragedy could have happened.
