North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper will hold a Wednesday afternoon news conference where he is expected to announce guidance on COVID-19 pandemic restrictions and public health recommendations for the coming weeks.
In his 2 p.m. briefing, Cooper will be joined at Secretary of the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Dr. Mandy Cohen.
The state leaders are expected to give an update on coronavirus data trends, and the expectation of loosening restrictions in the weeks ahead.
When Cooper last spoke last week, he expressed the interest in loosening restrictions, including social distancing requirement and mass gathering capacity restrictions. Cooper's goal is to loosen restrictions by June 1 if data trends, including the number of people vaccinated, continued to improve.
On Monday, the CDC made new mask-wearing recommendations. Their guidelines stated it was safe to not wear a mask when vaccinated people gather outside. Those gathering indoors, or outdoors with people who may not be vaccinated or whose vaccination status was unknown, were still encouraged to wear a mask.
The CDC recommendations do not supersede local and state mask mandates, including the existing North Carolina mask mandate.
