Here’s what it’s like to climb 463 steps to the top of Duomo in Florence. We bought our tickets from the ticket office right outside, and reserved a time slot for the next morning. The entrance is on the side of the church, and it starts off fairly easy. The only way up and down are through these tight corridors that were used by the builders of the cathedral. The climb soon turns into narrow spiral steps. You’ll briefly step out to a small walkway where you’ll have a few minutes to admire the Last Judgement fresco up close. I was so happy for this little rest break because it gave us enough time to see the painting at the closest angle. You continue to climb a bit more, this time it’s super steep until you reach the top. And finally, you reach the top and enjoy this gorgeous view of the city of Florence, and the bell tower. If you have a fear of heights or narrow spaces, this climb might not be best for you.
