Carl Perkins may have been rockabilly's only true artist. A guitar player of imagination and style, and also a writer who could articulate the poor country boy's life experience in a way that made you want to dance. Although he had only one major hit ("Blue Suede Shoes," which topped the Pop, Country and R&B charts at the same time), he probably had too much country in him to have the kind of success Elvis had. After his record sales started to fade, made a career as a country songwriter, penning hit songs for artist such as Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash, among others. And he never lost his creative fire. Unlike his only true peer of the era (both as a writer and a guitar player), Chuck Berry, Carl was never content to rest on his past successes, creating new and vibrant music almost to the end, which came as a result of cancer in January 1998.
