"Heavy rain made three rivers in Garut Regency, West Java, overflow, causing flash floods in 10 villages out of the three affected sub-districts Monday (12/10) in the morning. The three rivers that overflowed are the Cipalebuh River, the Cikaso River and the Cibera River. Three districts were affected by the flood, namely in Pamempeuk District, Cibalong District and Cikelet District. In Pamempeuk District, BPBD is still collecting data. The water level (TMA) is reported as 100-150 cm. Then as many as two bridge units were affected. Furthermore, in Cibalong District, as many as 110 housing units were submerged. The BPBD report states that the TMA reaches 50-80 cm and one bridge unit is affected. Meanwhile, in Cikelet District, road access is inundated."

Garut regency, West Java, have been displaced by flash floods and landslides due to torrential rainfall in the region since Sunday. Garut Regent Rudy Gunawan said that residents from Pameungpeuk, Cikelet, Cibalong, Peundeuy, Singajaya and Banjarwangi districts had been forced to flee their homes. He added that the regency administration had prepared public kitchens and shelters for residents. “Pamengpeuk is the most heavily affected by the flash floods. I am going there to see the situation. The social agency has already sent 10 tons of rice,” he said, as reported by tribunnews.com. According to local officials, the flood waters in Pamengpeuk reached up to 80 centimeters high. Rudy said the flash floods, landslides and ground movements that occurred on Monday were caused in part by deforestation in Cikajang and Cisompet districts. “The Garut regency administration will take legal action against [those responsible for] the deforestation, as it has caused disasters,” he said. Meanwhile, Garut Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) spokesperson Tubagus Agus Sofyan said the flash flood in Garut was caused by the overflowing of four rivers, namely the Cipalebuh and Cikaso rivers in Pamengpeuk, the Cibera River in Cibalong and the Cipasarangan River in Cikelet.
