Welcome to the NGO CSW65 Virtual Forum! Welcome to a new world of advocacy and action!
Here we are after years of gathering women’s voices at the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) at the United Nations, we at NGO CSW/NY have agreed to go fully virtual with our Forum for CSW65 due to the global pandemic.
How can we recreate the energy that happens when women gather? That is up to all of us. We all know one of the most effective gatherings in our advocacy happened 25 years ago. Is it odd that we were forced to rethink advocacy precisely on the 25th anniversary of that event? I don’t think so. The Fourth World Conference on Women in 1995 in Beijing changed the way gender equality was addressed in so many ways. Now we have an opportunity to recreate it again.
After collecting our synergies from the NGO CSW64 Forum cancellation and postponing all events around Generation Equality Forums, we gathered with our NGO CSW Co-Chairs in the Regions and agreed to join forces to experiment with this virtual platform to see how we can address all inequalities that Covid-19 has exposed. This global pandemic also made us rethink how we can advocate going forward.
We are planning all the usual activities that you expect from our Forum like Consultation Day, Parallel Events, Conversation Circles, Caucuses, Youth Events and so much more! This year you will also learn and engage with Generation Equality Forum (GEF), Action Coalitions, Women, Peace and Security & Humanitarian Action Compact and Adolescent Girl Investment Plan, as well as other partners, GEF campaigns with UN Women, France and Mexico.
Our goal is to make this platform as inclusive and productive as ever with a shared leadership model. For that we need your help. Let us work towards breaking silos and focus on concrete results while learning creative ways of mastering advocacy. We’ve learned so much from our predecessors and those who were in Beijing 25 years ago, yet I know for a fact there’s so much more to learn from the next generation. Let’s not just give the next generation lip service. Let’s make sure they have a safe space to engage and uplift us through intergenerational dialogue. The pandemic exposed so many inequalities. We can not keep doing what we’ve done in the past. It is time to truly create a new model, a model that does not discriminate, demean or disrespect one another. We must be ready to address any and all topics especially racism, LGBTQI+, marginalized women and girls, poverty and climate justice.
Finally, be sure to read and adhere to our Virtual Safety Guidelines and Principles, NGO CSW/NY has the right and responsibility to remove anyone who does not adhere to these principles. We have an opportunity to unite our voices against the tyranny of patriarchy, militarism and supremacy, let’s use it in an effective way.
Thank you, looking forward to an exciting and result oriented CSW65!
