Federation is like single sign-on but it's between two security domains.
So maybe from your company to another company service, or from your customer service into your application.
So it's single sign-on across domains.
Federation is really good because rather than managing all of the users and their access rights yourself, you can rely on another organisation to give you that trusted information in a secure manner.
Federation means you don't have to take full responsibility for the users that are accessing your system.
Instead, the organisation that you have a contract with controls and manages those users.
From the user perspective, it's very convenient because they're already logged into their own systems and they don't need to sign in again to your application.
So federation is all about moving between two different security domains and having this single sign-on experience.
