Josef Koudelka is a Czech photographer born on January 10, 1938, in the town of Boskovice, Czechoslovakia (now the Czech Republic). He is best known for his powerful black-and-white photographs of the landscape and people of his native country, as well as his images of the 1968 Soviet invasion of Prague.
Koudelka began taking photographs while still a teenager and went on to study photography at the Technical University in Prague. He became a freelance photographer in 1967 and soon after started to produce his most celebrated work.
In 1968, Koudelka was in Prague when Soviet tanks invaded the city, and he photographed the events that followed. The images he captured were published anonymously in The Sunday Times, and later credited to "P.P. (Prague Photographer)." The photographs brought Koudelka international recognition and led to his joining Magnum Photos, the prestigious photographic agency.
Koudelka's other major photographic projects have included a long-term study of gypsies in Czechoslovakia and around Europe, as well as a series of landscapes that explore the relationship between people and their environments.
Koudelka's photographs have been exhibited extensively and have won numerous awards, including the Prix Nadar in 1978 for his book "Gypsies" and the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography in 1992. Today, Koudelka is considered one of the most important photographers of the 20th century.
