We are in Hilo, Hawaii for 4 days and 3 nights as we explore the east side of the big island of Hawaii. We check out the waterfalls, eat sushi & poke, breweries, restaurants and drive up 13,000 ft to the top of Mauna Kea!
Just outside of Hilo, only by 30 minutes is Akaka State Park, home to the Akaka Falls. This beautiful waterfall has been in several movies during the golden age of cinema. Tarzan movies and DeMille movies were filmed at this location. Even closer to Hilo are Rainbow and PeePee waterfalls.
The first night in Hilo we sample beers at the local breweries. Hilo Brewery has many beers to choose from and not a bad one on tap. Pizza was awesome and should never be passed up as supplies do run out during the day. Ola Brewing had ciders and seltzers to add to their list and were very flavorful and delicious.
In the morning we went over to Ken's House of Pancakes for breakfast and coffee. Very disappointed that we didn't get to it the first morning or else we would have had breakfast there each day.
That evening we went to Hilo Bay Cafe. We had their sushi and poke along with every handcrafted cocktail on the menu. That's what happens when you have a great bartender and great service.
On our second day we travel to the top of Mauna Kea for the sunset. We will do this every time we go to the big island. We stop at the visitors center to acclimatize then head on up for the best view on the island. When we come down after sunset, we take photographs of the Milky Way and look into the stars long into the night.
Mauna Kea is a dormant volcanic mountain on the Big Island of Hawaii, located in the United States. It is considered one of the most sacred places in Hawaiian culture and is also well-known for its astronomical observatories. Mauna Kea is the highest point in Hawaii, reaching an elevation of over 13,800 feet above sea level, and its summit is considered one of the best sites in the world for astronomical observation due to its high altitude and clear, stable atmospheric conditions.
We stay a the Hilo Hawaiian right on the Hilo Bay. Our room had spectacular views of the bay and Coconut Island. Quick and easy access to Coconut Island made it convenient to walk to it every morning for sunrise. Also Next to the Hilo Hawaiian is Lili'uokulani Gardens. Dedicated to Queen Lili'uokalani, this beautiful park is a wonderful escape to walk around pools and exotic plants.
We took time to visit the Mauna Loa macadamia nut facility to see its operation. We learned much about the nut and found out that it is literally the toughest nut to crack.
After the third night we had some poke for lunch and got on the road for Kona. There we will spend our last week on the west side of the island for more fun and adventure!

****About****
We are Ron and Jodi. We have been together since 1992 and have been traveling and exploring around the Pacific Northwest and beyond the entire time. Please join us as we go rambling around our next 30 years while living our “work hard, play hard” philosophy. We will try to show as much of our adventures, tips and reviews as we can through our journey practicing for retirement.
This channel will be about adventures big and small, weekend getaways traveling in the motorhome exploring our region to flying away on extended vacations discovering new destinations. We hope to inspire others to make time to travel, explore and discover what our land has to offer.
We love to check out breweries, restaurants, local hikes in the area as well as traveling away to see what other destinations have to show us. We take our dogs as much as we can, but some areas aren't made for our furry kiddos.
Not every video will be an award winner but all we need is someone to laugh and enjoy the ride along the way.
