Cohoes Falls and the nearby hydro-electric power plant.
The falls was a major obstacle to building the Erie canal, which needed 16 locks rising 140 feet to bypass it and go from the Hudson river to the Mohawk, but when a dam was built west of the falls it helped power one of the largest cotton mills in the US in the 1830s. The power plant is still in operation.
