Coming from the east coast, we didn't realize how different the lodging situation would be here in California when visiting Universal Studios Hollywood or even Disneyland. The east coast provides true immersion alongside vacation package deals that include park tickets, resort stay, onsite transportation to/from the parks (sometimes from the airport as well), onsite dedicated walking paths, water taxis', early park entry, dedicated resort entrance to the theme parks, and free express pass at certain premium resorts! So you never have to worry about much, other than getting up early for early park admission.

Well.. here in the west coast it seems you have to book everything separately and are left having to make the ultimate decision of which hotel to stay at. Common sense says to choose hotels near Universal Studios Hollywood, but they can be astronomically expensive and provide you ZERO benefits! No early park entry, no passholder discount and even worse, those "premium" hotels are NOT onsite at Universal Studios Hollywood! Instead they are outside of the parks. This can become very stressful when booking through the Universal Studios Hollywood app as it gives you an option to bundle tickets with hotels, but these hotels are "partner hotels" and can become very expensive! We looked at some of the partner hotels and went the cheaper route, such as the Best Western, and to our surprise the Best Western would cost us anywhere from $256-$300 a night and it is NOT pet friendly!

If you are anything like us, we try to stay within a reasonable budget and couldn't accept having to pay upwards of $300 or more per night for a hotel that we will only be sleeping in and not enjoying any of their amenities. We tried going through various websites, watching countless YouTube videos, leveraging our Military discounts and even looking for credit card offers to see if they had better deals, but to be honest that would only save us about $80 for the entire stay, but it seems like nothing since taxes later get tagged on, on top of other fees which would eventually mask the $80 savings.

We sucked it up, took matters into our own hands and did some research over the weekend looking outwards of a 30 minute radius from Universal (North, South, West & East) to see if it would be possible to find and secure a hotel that wouldn't cost too much and would also be pet friendly and not charge us a parking fee. It took several searches but to our surprise, we found a beautiful city called "Santa Clarita" and the hotels in this vicinity are anywhere from 23 minutes to 27 minutes away from Universal Studios Hollywood! With a little bit of determination, we found our places to stay!
