The Bullring in Birmingham opened three hours early at 7am as staff anticipated a rush of eager shoppers – but the only place with a queue was the Greggs bakery as just a handful of customers milled around the centre. And at Tesco Extra in Kingston Park, Newcastle, there were more staff than customers with less than 20 people queuing at the doors when they opened at 5am, with piles of reduced Blaupunkt HD Smart TVs left untouched. But Argos said visits to its website in the first hour of Black Friday were up 50 per cent on last year, Currys PC World’s website reported its 'highest ever' number of orders and John Lewis said it was taking five orders every second online. Britons are expected to spend up to £2billion today and up to £4billion over the next four days – ending on Cyber Monday – as retailers make the most of the American-imported shopping phenomenon.
