New Zealand Prime Minister, John Key, says the damage bill from a 7.8 magnitude earthquake that hit the nation's South Island overnight, is likely to be "in the billions of dollars".

The powerful quake killed at least two people, damaged roads and buildings and sent thousands fleeing to higher ground.

It was followed by a strong new earthquake with a magnitude of 6.2.
