Hovercraft: Landing Craft Air Cushioned vehicle (LCAC) Beach Assault. Watch an LCAC go from land to ship to water
The Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) is a type of air-cushion vehicle (hovercraft) used by the United States Military. They transport weapons, equipment, cargo and personnel from ships to the shore and across the beach.
In this video clip we can see an LCAC in action. Loaded with an M1 Abrams tank fire up its engines, inflate its skirt and hover down towards the water and be on its merry way.
Later we see the LCAC exit the amphibious assault ship, U.S.S. Essex and make its way to a beach and unload its cargo of trucks and troops.
LCACs have been the workhorse of the US Marine Corps. It is the fastest way to get Marines and their equipment from larger transport ships like Amphibious Assault Ships to the shore or vice versa.
Landing crafts that came before LCACs had a top speed of approximately eight knots and could cross only 17% of the world's beach area. Assaults were made From one to two miles off-shore. Due to its tremendous over-the-beach capability, LCACs can access more than 80% of the world's coastlines at more than 40+knots when fully loaded. LCACs can reach speeds of over 70 knots hovering above the waters surface.
With the LCACs 200 nautical mile range, the Amphibious transport ships can stay beyond visual range and are much safer from coastal batteries that are capable of sinking these lightly armored ships.
These large Hovercrafts are stored underneath in the well decks of amphibious assault ships and are brought out to connect the amphibious assault ship to the shore.
