JAPAN vs CANADA | Highlights | Men's VNL 2024. Japan loses to Paris 2024 Olympic team Canada in five sets in Men's Nations League.
The third week of the preliminary round of the Volleyball Nations League 2024 (VNL) Philippine tournament is being held in Manila since Tuesday, June 18th.
On the same day in Japan time, the Japanese men's national team, ranked 3rd in the FIVB world rankings (before the start of the match), faced Canada, ranked 12th in the world and a qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and lost 2-3 (21-25, 25-20, 15-25, 25-20, 10-15). Their overall record in the qualifying round is now 6 wins and 3 losses.
In the first set, Japan returned accurate returns, but Canada's blocks worked and they allowed three block points in this set alone. Japan created break chances but could not convert them into points, and the set ended without Japan being able to find its rhythm. They lost the first set.
In the second set, the side-out rate rose to 80%. Furthermore, they turned the tide with their serves as a starting point. They broke from a serve by Akihiro Yamauchi, and in the middle of the match, Ai Takahashi broke through with a serve that varied in speed, leading to a 19-14 lead. The change in match-ups also changed the flow of the game, and they took the second set, tying the set count.
The third set was dominated by Canada from start to finish. In addition to allowing a service ace to their opponent, Japan also made four spike errors and was blocked three times, losing the set 15-25.
In the fourth set, the match was progressing at Canada's pace, but Kentaro Takahashi, who entered the match as a substitute, scored four points in this set alone. Furthermore, consecutive breaks on Seida Masahiro's serve, and two consecutive service aces by Ishikawa Yuki gave Japan the momentum to win 25-20, and the match went into a full set.
However, in the fifth set, Japan allowed Canada to take the lead from the beginning and went into the second half trailing 7-4. Japan was unable to break through the Canadian wall, receiving four blocks in this set alone, and lost to Canada 10-15 after a full set.
In the early stages of every set, the match was played at Canada's pace, with Japan playing catch-up. In the second and fourth sets, Japan gained the upper hand from the middle stages with consecutive breaks and service aces, but in the sets where issues such as blocks and poor serve-receive coordination emerged, Japan struggled. Furthermore, although Japan scored eight service aces, more than Canada, they only had three block points compared to Canada's 12.
Nishida Yuji
"Canada is a team that has had good results in the Nations League this season, so we were wary of them. When things were going well, we were winning sets, but we couldn't keep it up and it was tough. We lost, but I think we can accept this experience and move on to the next one. I wanted to make our block defense work a little better."
