The op.7 is a set of polkas published in Prague in 1855 and dedicated to Smetana's first wife. While the first and third are arguably some of the most elegant and charming he has ever written, the second polka might reflect the illness and death of Smetana's second daughter, as suggested by Graham Melville-Mason. It may be worth noting that the first salon polka has also been arranged by Liszt, but no crazy paraphrase is happening here, only an added introduction and a coda. It was published by Schirmer in an album of Raymond Lewenthal's piano encores.
Composer – Bedřich Smetana (1824-1884)
Piano – András Schiff
Year of recording – 1999
The sheet music is not yet public domain, but was used with the kind consent of Bärenreiter (Smetana Bedřich, Polkas, ©Bärenreiter Praha 2009, BA 9525).
