At the Ideas for India 2023 conference, a panel discussed the dynamic nature of federalism in India. Often perceived as a monolithic entity, India's federal structure is far more complex, with a heavy concentration of foreign investment in just six states. To understand India fully, it's crucial to examine its unique approach to federalism, especially post-2014 under PM Narendra Modi. While Modi’s government has used centralism to enable coordinated national policies, tensions have arisen with state governments over issues like GST refunds and centralisation of direct benefit schemes.
This session explores the relationship between the State and Centre and its importance for India's role on the global stage.
