On Friday, the Supreme Court took action to suspend the conviction of Rahul Gandhi, a leader of the Congress party, in a criminal defamation case related to his ""Modi surname"" comment. This move also reinstated his position as a Member of Parliament. The highest court in the country stated that the trial judge had not provided adequate reasons for imposing the maximum penalty of a two-year sentence. The court highlighted that the consequences of disqualification impact not only Gandhi but also the constituents of his electoral district.
Nonetheless, the Supreme Court also cautioned that Rahul Gandhi should have exercised greater caution in making the alleged remarks. The decision came in response to a petition filed by Rahul Gandhi challenging the Gujarat High Court's earlier ruling, which had declined to suspend his conviction in the defamation case concerning his comment about the ""Modi surname."" It's important to note that earlier this year, Rahul Gandhi's statement tied to Prime Minister Modi led to his disqualification as a Member of Parliament.
