The Montecore 3 from State Bicycle Company is shipped as a fixed gear 'Fixie' bicycle. However, the bike has a flip flop hub meaning it can be configured as either a fixie or as a single speed bike.
My previous review was with the bike in its fixed gear setup. I liked the bike, but the fixed gearing is something I'm just not fond of. I decided to let winter pass and now that spring has arrived it's time to get the bike into single speed mode for some hopeful spring fun.
Is it as fun as I expected? Yes - except on hills. It turns out there is some truth to the fixed gear power transfer thing. There is also a small hit on the look with the extra cabling and clips for the rear brake, but it's still a looker.
What do you think? Is it better as a single speed or is it fixed or nothing? Comment below.
